Some people think employers should not be concerned about how employees dress at work, but the quality of work only. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
A+:some job may require their employees to wear formally and even wear the dress according to the companies’ requirements. For example, for some receptionists, they are the first impression for clients and customers, so their dress may decide whether clients or customers will further to have business with the company. Also, a person’s dress should be clean and tidy, which reflects personal cleanness and is also indicative of his or her attitude toward the job.
A-: however, to exaggerate the significance of dress at work is not so reasonable for most jobs, especially compared with the quality of work. The most critical problem is that more attention on dress is unfair for those who really devote themselves to work. And for companies, if the employer stresses too much on dress while downplaying working performance, the company will not go further to be prosperous. After all, the development of a company depends on employee’s real contribution, not those ethereal elements like dress or appearance.
To be concluded, it should be admitted that for some jobs dress is reasonably important because it isthe first impression and it reflects employees attitude. Nevertheless, I think employers should shift their attention to work quality for that it is the cornerstone of the development of the company and the justified criterion to evaluate an employee.

The restoration of old building in major cities in the world costs enormous government expenditure. This money should be used in new housing and road development. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Huge public investment has been allocated into the area of restoring some buildings with cultural and aesthetics values in some metropolises. This is challenged / doubted by some people deeming that the money should be diverted to the construction of houses or infrastructures. I think both sides are worth the government expenditure.
For citizens, the public facilities and infrastructure are of predominant significance to our daily life because these will greatly improve our living standard. If the government neglect the investment in this area or put more money in other aspects, the public will definitely feel the inconvenience of their life in cities. Also, housing is a problem that captures every individual’s concern no matter where he or she comes from. That is because nobody could not afford a floating life without accommodation in the city. To ensure that people have their living places could be labelled as the basic requirement of the government. In this sense, housing should also be the priority of expenditure for the authorities.
In some cities, government invest much of the revenues in restoring old buildings. This practice should not be condemned without certain investigation. For example, some old buildings are of huge cultural values such as the living place of some famous figure. To restore these buildings turns out to be a meaningful policy to keep citizen’s sense of belonging. Also, some cities are rich enough so that they can put some money aside to do some things not so urgent. Unlike some other cities where many people are living under poverty-line, these cities tend to focus on maintaining culture and preserving traditions. Therefore, the economic level sometimes decides whether a city can spend much in restoring old buildings or not.
Thus, my view is that old buildings should be restored under the condition that these buildings are valuable and the local government has adequate budget. For those underdeveloped cities, the priority should be given to the investment in building more infrastructure and providing more accommodation for those in poverty or new-comers.

Some people think the most important thing about being rich is that gives person an opportunity to help other people. To what extent do you agree or disagree？
Unlike the past when most people were living in poverty and suffered starvation, today’s economic development has witnessed a trend that a large number of people become rich. However, one problem arises before many rich people: what is the most important thing of being rich?
Historically, to help those impoverished or underprivileged people is regarded as a virtue. Rich people who give generous help to the poor are usually labeled as the one with conscience and morality. By contrast, those unwilling to share their mercy with the others are always despised by the majority.
Also, many rich people fall into a luxurious lifestyle. They buy famous brands and lead an extravagant life. Some of them even embark on the wrong road such as drug abuse or gambling. This is due to the lack of right values of measuring property. If they are equipped with charity awareness, they would find satisfaction from donating to those people in need.
From another viewpoint, to help other is actually help rich people themselves. Today’s society, people are becoming interdependent and nobody is an island. There is no denying that a rich people may need commodities produced by those middle-class workers and a tycoon who suffers disease also need a doctor. To help others is one way to gather confidence and relations for others.
For all those discussed above, I think it is justified to say that the importance of being rich is to help others. Only by helping those in need, can the values of being rich be rightly demonstrated and the whole society will become more peaceful and affectionate.
Governments should make people responsible for looking after their own local environment. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
People today can shop, work and communicate with others via the Internet. They don't need to do these face to face. Is it a positive or negative development？
In the past, it was customary that people had to do their business or communicate with each other face to face. But the rise of internet has changed their life-style. That means, today’s people can do all these through the cable or line without seeing each other in the real world. This has brought huge impact to our life.
Undoubtedly, our working efficiency has been largely promoted due to the rise of internet. For example, people used to send mails to their business partners; this would take them a relatively long time. But today, email or other instant communication means enable them to have video conferences. Also, shopping styles have been changed completely. People now can stay at home and buy things through the screens of mobile phones. When they have satisfying items, what they need to do is to touch the screens and the goods will be delivered to their home in a short time. All these are the positive sides of internet.
On the other hand, there are some side-effects that internet inflicts upon us. The most critical problem lies in the estrangement/alienation of interpersonal relationship. Face-to-face communication makes people feel honesty and warmth between us. But online communication is usually cold and superficial. One example is that cases of cyber-fraudulence have been repeatedly reported these days. Another problem is that some crisis may spread to the whole world in a short period. The internet has connected the world together and no country is isolated from the others. This is double-edged sword. When some crisis breaks out, it may infect the others through the connection instantly.
As suggested above, my view is that the rise of internet is positive to our work, communicating and some other aspects of our life. Though it may also bring some other problems, these could be solved by our policies and prudence.

Some people argue that building the underground railway system can ease the pressure on the transport system, while others think building or broadening roads can achieve this. Discuss both views and give your own opinion?
Currently, many cities are suffering serious traffic congestion and public transportation is under tremendous pressure. As a way out, many governments decide to build subways. However, this is challenged by some people and they hold that to build or broaden roads could be a better alternative.
Today’s cities are under the process of massive urbanization, which leads to serious shortage of land resources. In metropolises, hardly could a road be built without demolishing thousands of houses. Such a demolition would be a colossal budget for the municipal. But to build subway system could avoid this barrier. Another merit of building subway is that passengers could enjoy great convenience. Compared with other transport means such as taxi and coach, subway is characterized with faster speed. It is rarely stopped by the land congestion or other accidents. That is why most megacities choose subway as the priority.
However, to broaden the present roads is also a good way for most medium or small cities. The benefits of roads are obvious. At first, it is relatively cheaper to build or broaden roads. It is reported that every kilometer of subway may cost the city millions of dollars while roads just need thousands or hundreds of dollars. In particular some small cities, they cannot afford the huge investment that a subway system needs, road is a better way out. Another reason is that road building technologies have already been mature and could be conveniently used in medium or small cities.
As has been suggested, metropolises plagued by traffic congestion and other transportation pressure may regard building subway as a better solution. However, for those small or medium-sized cities, for lack of sufficient budgets, to build or broaden roads seems to be a solution more acceptable.

According to the statistics, it is obvious that university education is relatively easier for students from a richer background to access while those from impoverished areas find it harder to get into university. Considering this situation, there arises a statement that universities should lower the standard of admittance and provide some preferential policies in recruiting poor children. I tend to think this statement is not so feasible and appropriate.
In many countries women are allowed to take maternity leave from their jobs during the first months after the birth of their baby. Do advantages outweigh disadvantages?
In many developing and underdeveloped countries, women’s rights are not well protected. Those who are working in sweatshop or private companies are not entitled to sufficient rest after their giving birth to child. Thus, it is advocated that companies should permit women to take maternal leave from their job. I believe this is the right proposal which should be implemented immediately.

In some cities, there is less control over the design and construction of new homes and office buildings. People can build in whatever style they like. Do you think the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?
In this age of individualism, people sing high of personal values, which could be reflected in the styles of designing and constructing buildings. When you are strolling in cities, you will be dazzled by a variety of buildings in different styles propping up every day. This has caused some concern over the uncontrolled development of city landscape.
Admittedly, the advantages of this personalized design and construction should not be denied.
However, from a general point of view in city planning, designing and constructing new homes and office buildings should take into consideration the overall harmony and security.
For short, in city planning, personal values, aesthetic needs and practical requirements should be respected in designing new buildings, which helps to enhance the cultural diversity of the city. But it should also be bore in mind that the development of buildings should be in compliance with norms of security and be in harmony with the city culture.
